While we are unsure of exactly when and where Nikita was born we do know that her mother was Roberta Wirth. We are also not sure if Nikita's father was married, divorced, or just did it all for the nookie with Roberta. Roberta was a troubled woman who became an alcoholic and had many abusive boyfriends. Nikita felt that her mother could never hear or talk to her. But Nikita and her mother had some good times together even when they were living on the streets as seen in Walk On By. Nikita did have some schooling. She went to Monroe Elementary for the fourth grade with teacher Mrs. Willette and had a good friend Julie. But other than what we learn in Friend, we are not sure what grades she finished. Finally when her mother preferred a new boyfriend over Nikita, and since he didn't like her, her mother told Nikita to get out.
Nikita lived on the streets by herself until that one fateful day in which she accepted a job to take out some garbage for $5 for a local restaurant. As she was coming back to collect her money, Nikita witnessed a strange man stabbing another man in the alley. That strange man attacked Nikita but she managed to wrestle the knife away from him but he gets away. Unfortunately the cops arrive at that very moment to see Nikita with the knife and the dead body. She is convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Section One, a covert anti-terrorist organization, takes Nikita out of jail with the "official" story that Nikita killed herself in prison. The first day in Section One she meets her trainer Michael and is given the choice to live, train, and work for Section or die and get buried in plot 8 row 30. Nikita chooses Section.
For 2 years, Nikita trains with others but mostly with Michael to learn fighting, computers, weapons, languages, etc. Section finally tests her to make sure that she is really Section material. She barely passes the test. For her reward, she gets a nice apartment, a code name of Josephine, and becomes a slave to Section One. Nikita has no choice since they can call her to do their dirty work at any time. She either works for section or is cancelled. Nikita never knew that answering her phone could be so dangerous or wildly exciting.
As Nikita works for Section One, she learns that she is different from a lot of the Section operatives. From her friendship with Birkoff, who is Section's computer specialist, and Walter, who is Section One's weapons specialist, Nikita learns that only a few are in the 5% club or those who haven't lost their souls and kept their humanity and compassion. This way of living and ways of doing things conflicts with Section's ways and so from the start she is with odds with the heads of Section, Operations and Madeline.
Nikita has an strong attraction to her trainer Michael but becomes increasingly upset as Michael continues to manipulate her one to many times for her own good.
Since she decides she is mad at Michael she decides to date Gray whom she met on a mission to retrieve a stolen Section Directory. Gray is an widowed architect with a young daughter Casey. But after some time Nikita realizes, with some convincing from Section, that she can not have a normal relationship with Gray and dumps him.
Michael meanwhile continues to give her mixed messages. At one moment he is hand dancing with her in Escape and the next flirting with other women like in Recruit. But finally when Section decides to cancel Nikita, Michael shows how much he cares by helping her to escape Section.
Nikita did escape and was out on her own for 6 months until another terrorist group recognizes her and captures her again. We learn later in Four Light Years Farther that at this time she was recruited by Center, the organization that Section answers to. So one could assume that it was Center who told the terrorists about Nikita. Nikita escapes from the terrorists and finally contacts Michael again. Michael thought he lost her but he does "have" her in a boat in Hard Landing. Nikita wants back into Section claiming that life outside is not all that she thought it would be. Michael and Nikita then concoct a plan to bring Nikita back in using the terrorists.
But as soon as Nikita is back in Section, Michael changes his tune and decides that a relationship with Nikita right now would not be prudent. Nikita also learns that Michael will not be her trainer again. Her new trainer is Jurgan, a level five operative who also trained Michael. Michael does not trust him but since Nikita was mad at Michael again, she decides to form a relationship with Jurgan. Nikita trusts Jurgan because he found out about the real reason Nikita was gone but still did not tell on her. It seems that Jurgan has secrets of his own in which he blackmails Section with. Section decides that his relationship with Nikita would make the perfect way to end Jurgan's blackmail of them. With the help of Nikita without her knowledge, Section gains access to Jurgan's house and destroys the information Jurgan has on them. Jurgan decides that he has nothing to live for after this and blows up real good in a mission.
Nikita does get her new apartment back but her friend Carla that she made when she lived there before her escape from Section no longer lives there. Carla does come back to visit Nikita but it is with a purpose. Carla was actually a secret operative of Adrian, the founder of Section One who got kicked out in a coup by Operations and Madeline.
Adrian wants Nikita to work for her and help her to retake Section One. Nikita goes along with the plan but also unknown to Adrian, Operations knows about her plans and has Nikita actually working for him. Section One finally captures Adrian and Nikita decides that even though Section One's means are ruthless, their ends at just.
Nikita is put on abeyance(cancellation) after that but continually manages to avoid death without the help of Michael. It seems that Michael is missing and when Nikita tries to find him she gets more than she bargained for. She finds out that Michael is on a blood mission in which he has a wife, Elena, and a son, Adam who have no clue he works for Section One. Michael started this mission years ago before he met Nikita to get to Elena's father, Salla Vachek. When Michael finally captures Vachek he must end his mission and never see his real son Adam or his "wife" again. Michael is very upset over not being able to see his son anymore that he finds he has no reason to live. Nikita is finally the one who gives him a reason to live.
Also during this time, Mick Schtoppel (who we first met in Gray) is sent to live in the next apartment to Nikita. Nikita and Mick form a kind of friendship.
With nothing to hold Michael back, he decides that he wants to fully commit to Nikita and so they start a relationship. Operations and Madeline do not like it since together Nikita and Michael make a formidable team who could one day try to take over Section just like they did and so Operations and Madeline try to tear them apart. Nikita and Michael try to hide their relationship by doing the nasty during missions but they find out. Operations and Madeline decide to do something drastic to stop the relationship between Nikita and Michael. They force Nikita to undergo the Gelman Process which takes out all her emotions. She becomes the perfect Section soldier. She has no conscience and kills whoever they tell her to and more importantly does not love and want to be with Michael. With the help of an unfrozen Adrian, Michael learns how to cure Nikita which consists of love and getting down in a slinky.
Now that Nikita is cured, Operations and Madeline have to find another way to keep Michael and Nikita apart so they make Nikita marry Helmut Volker, who they believe is an arms dealer with ties to Red Cell. It turns out that Helmut is really working for Interpol trying to take down terrorists. In the end, Nikita helps Helmut disarm a bomb then helps him escape so that no one can find him.
Nikita and Michael again resume their relationship still trying to hide it from Section until Nikita decides she wants out. With the help of Red Cell, a terrorist organization, she leaves Section. By disguising herself as another operative Quinn, Nikita gets back into Section One to get Michael out. They escape together and have lots of monkey love on a sailboat. But unknown to Michael, Nikita was really working for Center and was just using this time as a vacation until she could go back and help Center to re-evaluate Section One. When Nikita and Michael are caught and brought back in, she reveals that she is a Center spy and that Mick Schtoppel is really Mr. Jones, the head of Center and all the Sections. (I would like to assume that Mick did not tell Nikita who he was until just before he gave her the mission to leave Section.) Nikita helps Mr. Jones evaluate Section with the consequences of Madeline "killing" herself, Walter being sent to the Farm, making Operations run Section One for 7 more years, and puts Michael on abeyance. But during Michael's abeyance mission, Nikita helps Michael escape by telling him a lie that she never loved him.
Nikita then goes to work for Center and becomes obsessed on finding out who her father really is even though I am unsure how she knows that her father has to be a Section Operative. Mr. Jones makes her go back to Section One to help them destroy another terrorist organization, The Collective. She and Section One fail and so she must stay there until they destroy those terrorists. Nikita gets Walter back from the Farm but finds out that her new partner Marco O'Brien who she helped get into Section is not as good as Michael especially since he can not sneak.
In another mission, Nikita finds out that Mick is not really Mr. Jones and that the real Mr. Jones is her father. She also finds she has a step-sister Michele who lives the good life with Daddy and does not have to risk her life everyday. Of course Nikita is a little angry but tries to start a relationship with her father. In the meantime, Michael is trying to get back into Section One by trying to gain information from the terrorists that Nikita and Section cannot defeat. Michael finally contacts Nikita to get back in and when he comes back they have some awesome sex that USA would not let us see. Michael finds out that the terrorists have his son Adam and that they want to trade Mr. Jones for him. Operations tries to get Adam back but is killed. In the end, Mr. Jones dies (or so we think) so that Michael can have his son. But now Nikita is head of Section One and must stay in Section but she lets Michael and Adam go with the hope that she and Michael can be together again someday when Adam is older.
